Identity and Architecture: Introduction

Hey all:

I created this blog so we can all share our ideas on architecture and its roll in today´s society, and specially its relation to identity of nations. Is architecture meant to enrich the existing culture of nations and thus promote its identity? Or should it be a way of forging a new one?

In many cases one particular building has become a city´s representative icon, despite having no relation to the city's roots and culture. Is this right? Is this fair? Fair with its own people, who are many times 'bought' by the idea of a new way of living, hidden behind the concept of 'development'.
